Description of Decoration Markers
Markers for drawing and decoration are wonderful and completely safe for children. Their applications range from drawing and coloring to decorating greeting cards, invitations, scrapbooks, tags, highlighting important things at school, university, or work, and much more.
Material Composition
Drawing markers are a type of pen with a tip made of porous, compressed fibers (felt) and a reservoir filled with colored ink. The reservoir has an absorbent core where the ink is stored.
The ink itself contains a special solvent that keeps it in a liquid state. Until the 1990s, this solvent was toluene or xylene. However, these materials are harmful and have been replaced by alcohol.
History of Drawing Markers
The first marker was patented in 1910 by Lee Newman. At that time, the pen was simply a cylinder filled with ink, leading to a felt tip. Shortly thereafter, several other patents for drawing markers appeared, but none were good enough to start selling.
The first modern and usable marker was Sydney Rosenthal’s "Magic Marker," created and sold in 1953. The marker had a glass tube with ink and a felt tip, and its name came from its ability to write on any surface.
In 1996, Magic Markers 2 were launched, along with markers that can be erased from whiteboards and glass.
Today, the variety of drawing and decoration markers is truly vast, including standard markers, as well as those with metallic or neon colors, white markers, or so-called magic markers due to their ability to change other colors on paper.
Among the numerous varieties, there are also:
- glitter effect markers
- markers with interesting scents
- markers with a cone-shaped tip
- erasable markers
- zig-zag nib marker,
- thick nib markers
- double-tipped markers, and those that come in stamp form.
Types of Markers
- Permanent – can be used on various surfaces such as wood, glass, plastic, metal, or stone.
- Highlighters – used to cover something already written while still leaving it readable or for highlighting. They are usually in neon colors.
- Whiteboard markers – made to be easily erased with a dry or wet cloth.
- Drawing markers – also known as felt-tip pens. Used for drawing and coloring.
Application and Purpose
Markers for drawing, decoration, and felt-tip pens have endless applications:
- With textile markers, you can decorate and completely change the style of your clothes, decorate a shopping bag to bring you more joy, or even decorative pillows at home;
- With permanent markers, you can create very interesting and effective decorations for your home, such as various boards with motivational quotes or messages, decorate candlesticks, cups, decorative plates, Christmas ornaments, make the phone case more fun, and much more;
- With highlighters, studying and organization become as easy as child’s play;
- And with drawing markers, you will make your children happy, especially if you give them as many colors as possible so they can choose freely while drawing and coloring their favorite books;
Other applications of markers include calligraphy, also known as beautiful writing, which is truly an art.
Tips for Storing Drawing and Decoration Markers
- Double-tipped markers – store them in a horizontal position. Otherwise, it is very likely that one tip will dry out, and the other will have ink sedimentation. When lying down, they will not only stay moist, but also last longer.
- Felt-tip pens and highlighters – store them vertically with the cap down to prevent them from drying out. This way, the ink stays at the tip of the marker, in contact with the fibrous felt tip.
