Threads and Embroidery Floss
Embroidery is a complex and multifaceted art form. It would help you relax, enjoy the delicate process of creating masterpieces, and fill your home with cozy and sweet items that radiate a comfortable aura.
Embroidery involves creating beautiful pictures, tapestries, original mats, and decorative packaging for various items. What are the threads used for embroidery called?
When creating embroidered pictures, tablecloths, clothing, and other products, embroidery floss is used. This is a special type of yarn produced by hand spinning or industrial production.
Types
There are several types of embroidery floss, depending on the composition. These can be entirely natural, synthetic, or blended, containing a certain percentage of natural and artificial fibers.
The classification is as follows:
- Cotton floss (the most common type, made entirely of cotton and suitable for most embroidery types)
- Wool floss (ideal for creating ornaments on pillows and for producing tapestries, containing a high percentage of natural wool)
- Linen floss (great for embroidery on linen fabric or canvas, perfect for cross-stitching)
- Melange floss (threads that can create an original pattern with varying colors from dark to light along the entire length)
- Satin floss (made of 100% viscose, provides embroidery with a silky shine)
- Multicolored floss (features several harmonizing colors within a single thread)
- Mercerized floss (gives an unusual shine when light hits it in the dark)
Additionally, there are threads with various qualities. Antique threads, which mimic the colors of gemstones or the glow of pearls, are quite popular.
String Art - How to Create a Panel with Threads and Nails?
You may not have heard the term "string art," but you’ve likely seen beautifully crafted decorations made using this technique. This method requires only colored threads and nails, but you can create unique panels, pictures, and even jewelry with it.
String art involves stretching a colored thread like a string between nails that are hammered into predetermined outlines to form the future picture.
If you think string art might be too difficult, think again! There’s nothing you can’t do! Prepare a suitable flat board, nails (no longer than 1-2 cm), threads, and a small hammer.
Choose your favorite design. Print it on an A4 sheet and you are ready to get started. Place the design on the wooden board. Begin hammering the nails closely together, leaving little space between them. Think of it this way: there should be about half a centimeter to a centimeter between each nail.
The nails should be hammered to the same height.
Do not use fluffy or woolen yarns. Standard embroidery floss is better, as it allows for tight wrapping. Yarns with too many fibers can visually spoil the picture.
For those who can’t draw or don’t have a printer, a simple trick will help you create a string art decoration. Take a children’s coloring book with large images. Cut out the design and transfer it to the wooden board. If you can’t draw well, simply tape it directly—you can remove the template after wrapping the threads.
Now start wrapping the threads. You can do this sequentially or randomly. It’s best to wrap along the contours of the image, encircling each nail head. The goal is to cover the entire panel with threads. If you have many details, work on each one separately, and hide the thread ends under the picture.
Friendship Bracelet
The most common friendship bracelet is made from threads. The knot-tying method comes from Native American traditions, adopted by the first representatives of the hippie movement several decades ago. This is the simplest way to create beautiful jewelry.
To attract positive events, it is best to start when the moon is waxing and to rid yourself of something when the moon is waning. Choose a time when you won’t be interrupted and focus entirely on the process.
While weaving, you can listen to a mantra or prayer suited to your purpose. If you’re making a friendship bracelet for a friend or loved one, tie the bracelet yourself with three knots, wishing the bracelet owner safety and protection.
Start by choosing several thread colors. Prepare two threads of about 60 cm from each color. Tie all the threads in a knot, leaving at least 10 cm of thread before the knot. Tape it to a smooth surface or pin it to a cushion.
If you’ve chosen six colors, you should have a total of 12 threads or two of each of the six colors. Divide them into two columns—each column containing one of each of the six colors. The arrangement should be mirrored on both sides.
Interesting Facts About Tapestries
It is believed that tapestries come from the Italian Renaissance. Similar weaving techniques were known in ancient Egypt, China, Greece, and even in highly developed pre-Columbian societies.
Many wonderful tapestry masterpieces, preserved in museums and private collections, are associated with Flanders County, and especially with the modern French city of Arras.
The fashion boom for tapestries began with the establishment of the first specialized factory by the Gobelin brothers in Paris in 1607. Although hand production initially declined, it later regained strong market positions.
There are many ways to utilize tapestries at home. Embroidered panels and pictures create a special atmosphere, while tapestry upholstery provides a sense of luxury, comfort, and beauty. Tapestries in pastel color palettes, especially ones with hunting motifs, still lifes, and pastoral scenes, are particularly suited for villas and country houses.
