Description of Decoupage and Decoration Pastes
Decoupage and decoration pastes can be used for decorating all types of materials and products. In the decoupage technique, for example, they can be used for aging and achieving a vintage effect. They can also create a rust effect.
The different effects of decoupage and decoration pastes are due to their varied textures: sandy, grainy, velvety, snowy, or marble. To add more relief and structure, you can use wax pastes and patinas to achieve a more finished and beautiful look.
Application and Purpose of Decoupage and Decoration Pastes
Decoupage pastes, as well as antique pastes, can be applied to various surfaces with a small cloth or brush. Their primary purpose is for patination on already decorated surfaces. They can also be used for the restoration of old furniture, frames, and other items, with some being applicable by hand.
If diluted with turpentine, they can be used for gilding, creating a stunning imitation with metallic gold and silver reflections.
For the base of decoration with decoupage pastes, any well-cleaned surface can be used, with porous surfaces preferably primed beforehand. The application of the paste should be single-layered, with figures created in the first layer using various tools. The thickness of the figures should not be too large.
Once the first layer is completely dry, a second, filling layer is applied. After it dries well, it is polished with a woolen cloth or a metal tool. During use, the products do not emit toxic substances, and the brushes and tools can be cleaned with water.
Tips for Easy Application of Decoupage and Decoration Pastes
- Use a quality brush
- Ensure you have enough antique wax to complete the project
- Be cautious with the amount of wax you apply – if too little is applied, it will absorb like a cream, and the desired effect will not be achieved. If too much is applied, the result will be a sticky surface that will take a long time to dry completely.
- After it dries completely, carefully inspect each part and corner. If you notice dry spots, apply another layer.
- Use an old T-shirt to remove excess wax, ensuring it is not wrinkled while doing so, as this will affect the decoration of your item.
- Do not limit yourself to using only clear wax. Instead, experiment with all the colors available on the market. You can even mix different colors to create your own.
- When you start applying the decorative wax, begin from the end of the object or, if it’s something with legs like a table or chair, start from one leg, then remove the excess wax and continue with the remaining parts.
- Leave the decorated item to dry for at least 24 hours and then wipe it again with a lint-free cloth or brush. You can use a buffing brush for this purpose.
A Brief Overview of Some Types of Decoupage Pastes
Velvet Relief Paste – This type can be applied to any surface: glass, ceramics, leather, cardboard, and more. It is a paste made of very fine particles that retain their relief shape after drying and create a soft feel to the touch.
The main color of the product is white but can be tinted with any water-based or acrylic color. With Velvet Relief, thin lines can be drawn with a brush or tubes with nozzles.
It leaves a smooth relief that remains volumetric after drying. After drying, it can be sanded or processed with other tools.
Quartz Relief Paste – has exceptional strength after complete drying. It withstands all extreme weather conditions. Quartz Relief consists of larger quartz particles and gives the appearance of coarse stone, slightly eroded by time.
Its base color is also white but can be tinted in various colors. The product is water-based and environmentally friendly. It is especially suitable for the "Stone Lace" technique but can be used in almost every area of decoupage and decoration on glass, ceramic, wood, and other surfaces.
